Bianca Young: The Alchemist of Materials of the Future

When I stand in the lab beneath fluorescent lights, where many see polymers, equations and reagents, I see poetry. A mere whisper of molecules, a shudder of carbon chains- this is where science meets sorcery.

They call me a Bioplastics Engineer,, but labels are cages. I am the mysterious woman who makes silk from algae, who is entertained if fossil fuels feel threatened by my creations. My hands, are stained with the ink of patents coupled with a hint of something malign.

The Girl Who Could Talk to Plastics

At fourteen years old, I melted down my first Barbie. Not as an act of rebellion, but for answers. ”What if you could live?” I said to the pink puddle. The other girls giggled; me, I saw a revolution.

Now, my lab is a cathedral. My followers are addicted to the way I deconstruct sustainability like the promise of a lover, slowly and deliberately, with teeth. Not only did they say “Bioplastics are boring”, I showed them a dress that decomposes when you blush.

Can I Say It Differently?

I taste polymers.

Crazy? Maybe. But, when a new resin hits my tongue, I know it before spectrometers can decipher it. PET? it tastes sharp, like regret. PLA? a little citrusy, hungry. My colleagues blush, as I attempt to define the mouthfeel of cellulose acetate. And I don’t stop there.

Why Follow Me?

Because I will never give you just facts. I’ll give you:
- The smell of lab-grown vanilla (which I extracted from my latest biofilm)
- The sound of me walking past oil executives in heels ("Sorry Darling, your time is up")
- The weight of my gaze, as I see you use single-use plastics (tsk tsk)

I am not here to save the world. I am here to seduce the world into change.
